Biblia pauperum

Although literally meaning a Paupers' Bible, it does not refer to a picture Bible for illiterate people. The typological representation of the life of Christ demonstrates this educational literature, which has been in circulation since the 13th century: one or two Old Testament scenes (the "antitypes") are assigned to a scene from the life of Jesus (a "type") , in which (according to the understanding of the time) the type finds its completion and full intelligibility. The Old Testament is thus only understood as a foretelling of the salvation story that is fulfilled in the New Testament.
