Gospel Book

A Gospel book contains the complete, continuous text of all four Gospels; the text therefore begins with Matt. 1 and ends with Rev. 21. The text of the Gospels was so highly valued that it was understood to represent Christ himself. That is why Gospel books often received the most splendid and precious furnishings, e.g. gold and silver letters on parchment colored in the imperial color purple.
