Berlin Atlas of Antonio Millo
(under 1,000€)
The World Atlas of Antonio Millo from 1586 is an outstanding example of Venetian cartography from the Age of Discovery. In this work, the Aegean-born seafarer and cartographer Antonio Millo combines practical nautical experience with the scientific and artistic worldview of the Renaissance. On magnificently colored maps embellished with gold and silver, the image of the world as it was understood at the time unfolds before the viewer. Compass roses, a dense network of rhumb lines, and numerous coastal settlements, harbors, and islands make the atlas both a precise instrument of navigation and a work of exceptional aesthetic appeal. Astronomical and cosmological diagrams illustrating the movements of the sun and moon and the structure of the heavens expand the work into a comprehensive vision of Earth and cosmos. The chart manuscript bearing the shelf mark MS Ham. 446 at the Berlin State Library thus preserves not only geographical knowledge, but also the spirit of discovery of an age in which the boundaries of the known world were being redefined.
Venice as a Center of Geographical Knowledge
In the sixteenth century, Venice was a major center of cartography. Merchants, seafarers, and scholars brought news of coastlines, trade routes, and newly explored territories to the lagoon city. Here, practical navigational knowledge merged with the Renaissance understanding of the world.
The Greek-born cartographer and seafarer Antonio Millo came from the Aegean island of Milos and worked in Venice. His nautical experience shaped his meticulous recording of coastlines, harbors, and islands. With the World Atlas of 1586, he developed the tradition of Mediterranean sea charts into a comprehensive representation of the known world.
Fourteen Maps of a Changing World
At the heart of the codex are fourteen double-page maps. They lead from the Mediterranean across Europe, Africa, and Asia to the territories of the New World. Together, they present a panorama of a world whose perceived dimensions had changed dramatically during the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries.
Particularly impressive are the depictions of the Caribbean, Central America, and the northern coast of South America. Cuba, Hispaniola, and Jamaica appear as integral parts of a world view that had expanded only a few generations earlier. Here, inherited knowledge and new discoveries meet directly.
The differences between the individual regions contribute greatly to the historical fascination of the atlas. The Mediterranean coastlines are rendered with remarkable cartographic accuracy, while more distant territories still reveal areas of uncertainty. The work therefore also illustrates the limits of contemporary geographical knowledge.
The World from a Seafaring Perspective
Millo’s maps belong to the tradition of portolan cartography, which was primarily developed for navigation in the Mediterranean. Coastlines, harbors, islands, and anchorages are carefully recorded, while the interiors of the continents remain secondary. The world is consistently explored and understood from the sea.
A dense network of rhumb lines and directional lines extends across the maps and connects their elaborately designed compass roses. Numerous place names are written closely along the coastlines. This arrangement reveals how profoundly trade and geographical knowledge were shaped by maritime routes.
Science and Precious Decoration
The atlas was not merely a nautical aid. Its rich coloring and embellishments in gold and silver give it a distinctly representative character. Geographical knowledge appears not simply as practical information, but as a precious expression of learning and prestige.
Compass roses, decorative elements, and finely graduated colors structure the pages. It is precisely the combination of nautical precision and artistic splendor that accounts for the exceptional appeal of this chart manuscript.
Earth, Heavens, and Navigation
The atlas is not limited to countries and seas. Cosmological and astronomical diagrams also address the order of the heavens and the position of the Earth within the cosmos. Explanations of navigation demonstrate the interplay of practical experience, celestial observation, and mathematical calculation.
For the Renaissance, cartography, astronomy, and navigation were closely interconnected fields of knowledge. Millo’s work records not only the shape of the known world, but also the attempt to understand its underlying principles and apply them to navigation.
A Document of the Age of Discovery
The World Atlas of Antonio Millo from 1586 captures a decisive moment in the history of European knowledge. It brings together the tradition of Mediterranean sea charts, the experience of a seafarer, and the geographical insights of the great voyages of discovery.
The manuscript fascinates through its combination of historical significance, cartographic mastery, and artistic beauty. MS Ham. 446 from the Berlin State Library preserves the world view of an age in which the known boundaries of the Earth were being redefined.
