Description
Book of Miracles

Miraculous signs were already interpreted as signs of God in the Christian Middle Ages and have always fascinated people. Despite the emergence of humanism and the development towards modern natural sciences in the 16th century, the religious connotation of “miracles” remained. Miraculous phenomena and appearances were seen as part of the nature created by God. This can also be seen in the Augsburg Book of Miracles, which was created shortly after 1552. It contains 169 large gouache paintings with short, explanatory captions that artistically depict a wide variety of miracles – from unusual creatures such as multi-headed beasts, natural phenomena such as earthquakes and cosmic events such as solar eclipses to incredible stories from the Old Testament and St. John's Book of Revelation. The captivating images were painted by Hans Burgkmair the Younger (1500–1562)(1500-1562) and Heinrich Vogtherr the Younger (1513–1568), who were in some instances inspired by works by Albrecht Dürer, Hans Holbein the Younger and Sebald Beham.
