Description
Chants Royaux du Puy Notre-Dame d'Amiens

The Chants Royaux du Puy Notre-Dame d'Amiens are a jewel of the illustrious library of the influential Louise of Savoy (1476–1531), Duchess of Angoulême, mother of the French King Francis I and repeatedly regent in his absence. During a visit to Amiens, she was so moved by the wonderful wall paintings and accompanying verse inscriptions in the city's famous cathedral that she requested copies from town's officials. Without further ado, they had a corresponding manuscript produced for the royal visitor. None other than the renowned and gifted illuminator Jacques Platel was commissioned to create the 49 haunting full-page miniatures, which are primarily dedicated to the life of the Virgin Mary. His art brings the scenes to life in vibrant colors and magnificent golden frames. At the same time, the pious poems are introduced by ornate, gold-decorated initials, which also allow the text pages to shine in the splendor of refined Renaissance illumination.
