Description
Hieronymus Mercurialis: De Arte Gymnastica

Girolamo Mercuriale (1530–1606) was an widely studied and much-traveled Italian doctor and later professor of medicine who achieved the highest recognition for his work as personal physician to Emperor Maximilian II (1527–1576), for which he was even elevated to the nobility. Here he also applied principles that he wrote down in his most famous work De Arte Gymnastica, which was to remain a medical bestseller long after his lifetime. The Art of Gymnastics is the first European work to deal exclusively with the medical effects of physical exercise. In it, Mercuriale incorporated ancient health and sports teachings that were very popular at the time. One of the most beautiful and richly illuminated editions of the work was printed by Andreas Frisius in Amsterdam in 1672. It features 36 masterful, full-page copperplate engravings by Cristoforo Coriolano, some of which are even double-page and fold-out. A gem of medical literature!
