Description
Johann Caspar Winterlin's Model Book of Calligraphy

The Stiftsarchiv Muri-Gries in Sarnen preserves an artistic gem of masterly book art by a historical figure from the Benedictine monastery of Muri: the Calligraphy Book by Johann Caspar Winterlin. The talented scribe and illuminator mainly created magnificently illuminated antiphonaries for his own monastery, but also for the Abbey of St. Gall and Beromünster Stift. Winterlin (ca. 1570/75-1634) also worked as an engraver, musician and builder of astronomical instruments. The landscape-format Book of Calligraphy dating from 1610 gives a wonderful impression of his great artistry. 52 pages present an enormous range of artistic calligraphy, often in brilliant colors. The fine and masterly penwork is just as impressive today as it was 400 years ago!
