Description
Livre D'Heures de Henri II

With its 20 enchanting and sumptuous miniatures by three masterly hands, the Livre D'Heures de Henri II is a truly magnificent example of French Renaissance book illumination. The Dinteville family commissioned the manuscript from the Bellemare group around the so-called Master of Henry II between 1543 and 1547 in order to present Henry II with the luxury codex as a gift at his coronation. Four full-page miniatures were added to the work for this occasion. Since then, the first double-page shows the coat of arms of Henry II and, opposite, a cartouche with a corresponding dedication inscription. The full-page miniature on the story of creation and King Henry II's miraculous healing of a scrofula sufferer are also later additions. The remaining miniatures depict three of the evangelists and an extraordinary cycle of pictures on Old Testament stories, which appear in artistic colors in front of dreamy landscapes and ancient ruins.
