Arsenal Marco Polo
(1,000€ - 3,000€)
The Arsenal Marco Polo transforms the most celebrated medieval account of Asia into an extraordinary gallery of peoples, cities, rulers, animals, and marvels. Produced in Paris between 1480 and 1500, the French parchment manuscript contains Marco Polo’s Devisement du monde and is illuminated with 197 miniatures—an exceptional density of imagery even among luxury travel manuscripts. The pictures do not merely decorate the text: they translate reports of Persia, India, China, and the island worlds of the East into the visual language of late-medieval Europe. A separate prologue by Robert Frescher precedes Marco Polo’s narrative. The codex is therefore both a major witness to the French transmission of the work and a captivating document of how Europe imagined the wider world on the eve of the great oceanic voyages. Its pages make distance visible and turn geographical knowledge into a courtly experience of discovery.
The World in 197 Images
The Arsenal Marco Polo is one of the most spectacularly illustrated witnesses to Marco Polo’s Devisement du monde. Written in French on parchment in Paris between 1480 and 1500, the manuscript turns the Venetian traveller’s account into a sequence of 197 miniatures. Cities, courts, battles, caravans, exotic animals, religious customs, and fabulous beings accompany the reader across Asia.
The visual cycle is not a modern documentary record of the places described. Its painters translated unfamiliar landscapes and societies into forms their Parisian audience could understand: eastern rulers appear in late-medieval courtly settings, distant cities acquire European walls and towers, while reports of strange peoples and animals are shaped by inherited legends. Precisely this mixture of observation, hearsay, and imagination makes the manuscript a vivid map of European knowledge around 1500.
Marco Polo’s Book in French
The main text belongs to the French transmission of Marco Polo’s work and begins on folio 9. It is preceded by a prologue written by Robert Frescher, a text independent of Marco Polo’s narrative. This combination shows that the volume was conceived not as a simple copy but as a carefully framed reading experience for a cultivated audience.
Marco Polo’s account ranges from the routes through Persia and Central Asia to the court of the Great Khan, the wealth of Chinese cities, India, and the islands of the eastern seas. Trade, administration, warfare, religion, natural history, and marvels stand side by side. The book offered late-medieval readers nothing less than an ordered description of the inhabited world beyond Europe.
A Pictorial Geography for Courtly Readers
The abundance of images changes the way the text is read. Instead of encountering Asia only as a succession of names and reports, the reader moves from one carefully framed scene to the next. Processions, enthroned rulers, fortified cities, hunts, sea voyages, ceremonies, and encounters with unfamiliar peoples create a rhythm of expectation and discovery. The miniatures divide the long account into memorable units and give visual form to information that would otherwise remain abstract. The codex therefore functions as both narrative and atlas: not a measured map of space, but a sequence of places made present through story and image.
The artists worked within established Parisian conventions. Architecture, clothing, gesture, and social hierarchy often resemble the world of a late-medieval European court. This apparent anachronism is not simply a failure of accuracy. It was a method of translation. Foreign customs became legible by being recast in familiar visual terms, while exceptional creatures, riches, and rituals retained the sense of wonder that made Marco Polo’s book so compelling. The images thus reveal as much about their makers and patrons as about the regions they claim to depict.
The manuscript also stands at the meeting point of several kinds of authority. Marco Polo’s reputation as a traveller, the literary shaping of the French text, the framing prologue, and the prestige of lavish illumination all support one another. Written testimony is confirmed by visual abundance; visual invention gains credibility from the traveller’s narrative. The result is a book in which knowledge, curiosity, status, and imagination become inseparable.
Travel, Knowledge, and Wonder
The manuscript emerged only a few years before Portuguese and Spanish voyages transformed Europe’s geographical horizon. It therefore belongs to a decisive moment: inherited medieval cosmography still coexists with practical commercial information and an intense curiosity about distant cultures.
With its exceptional pictorial programme, the Arsenal Marco Polo is more than an illustrated travel book. It is a monumental visual archive of how late-medieval Europe imagined Asia—at once geographically ambitious, culturally revealing, and irresistibly rich in narrative detail.
