Description
Egbert Psalter

The Egbert Psalter is not only significant as an outstanding example of Ottonian book art from Reichenau Abbey, but also fascinates with its turbulent and exceptionally well-documented provenance history. While the manuscript was originally created for the powerful Archbishop Egbert of Trier (950-993) in the Reichenau scriptorium as a liturgical book with the Old Testament Psalms and embellished with gold-decorated, full-page miniatures and initial pages, Gertruda of Poland (1025-1108), the consort of the Grand Prince of Kiev, had a personal selection of prayers added and illuminated to the manuscript between 1078 and 1086. Her love for her eldest son Yaropolk (before 1050-1086 or 1087) is shown both in prayers for him and in two full-page miniatures in which Gertruda had him immortalized. Today, the codex is adorned with a total of 23 Ottonian and Byzantine full-page miniatures and one smaller one. The purple and gold splendor is complemented by large and full-page gold decorated initials.
