Description
Tablature for Liute

Lute music was hugely popular among secular music in the 16th and 17th centuries and was mainly played in the form of dances. In the Kingdom of Bohemia, Nikolaus Schmall von Lebendorf (Mikuláơ Ơmalem), who was actually the scribe of the royal governor Jaroslav Boƙita z Martinic (1582–1649), became a star of this genre at the beginning of the 17th century. His employment with his learned and well-travelled master enabled him to include international compositions in his repertoire, which in turn influenced the Bohemian music scene. He also dedicated his best-known work, the Tablature for Liute, to Jaroslav Boƙita. In it, he primarily processes Italian dances and notation methods, but also various German pieces. The two Protestant hymns included are particularly remarkable, which the musician added to his compilation despite his employer's strict Catholicism. Thus, the trilingual anthology is a fascinating piece of Bohemian music history and its international connections.
