The game has enjoyed such popularity that it has appeared in works of art across the centuries in various artistic traditions, a survey of which is presented here.

Golf has been a beloved pastime since the Middle Ages. Here we have various images of golf and other related games like polo and palle-maille, a precursor to croquet, from across Europe and beyond. The compendium also includes Jeu de Paume, an indoor precursor to tennis, and Soule à la Crosse, a team sport whose rules fall somewhere between field hockey and golf. These depictions range from miniatures in books of hours, to Persian paintings, to works from the Dutch Golden Age. This is a wonderful visual survey of the development of golf that is sure to please devotees and historians alike.
