Nyújtódi Codex
(under 1,000€)
The Nyújtódi Codex—also known as the Székelyudvarhely Codex—is one of the most personal monuments of early Hungarian literature. In 1526, the Franciscan friar András Nyújtódi translated and copied the Book of Judith for his sister Judit, a nun at Teiuș, so that she would not be without the book of her patron saint in her cell. This is the earliest surviving Hungarian version of Judith and one of the rare medieval Hungarian translations whose maker identifies himself. The composite manuscript, written between 1526 and 1528, also contains catechetical instruction, meditations on death and obedience, exempla, guidance for religious life, and Gospel readings. Its mixture of learned sources, spoken explanation, and familial care opens an unusually direct view onto women’s reading and Franciscan pastoral culture in Transylvania at the end of the Middle Ages. Few codices bring the human circumstances of translation so vividly into view.
A Brother’s Book for His Sister
The Nyújtódi Codex owes its fame to an unusually intimate colophon. In 1526, the Franciscan friar András Nyújtódi translated the Book of Judith from Latin into Hungarian for his sister Judit, a nun at Teiuș. He explains that he did so out of fraternal affection, so that she would not remain in her cell without the book of the saint who bore her name.
This personal voice is exceptional in medieval Hungarian manuscript culture, where translators and scribes usually remained anonymous. The colophon turns an act of translation into a document of family, pastoral care, and female reading.
A Composite Book for Nuns
The manuscript was assembled from five sections that had originally circulated separately. Its first part contains the earliest surviving Hungarian version of the Book of Judith and catechetical teaching. Further sections offer meditations on death, collections of moral exempla, reflections on obedience and perseverance in religious life, and Gospel pericopes.
Several hands participated. A section completed at Teiuș in 1528 may have been copied by Judit herself, although this cannot be regarded as certain. The volume’s varied scripts and contents reveal a book shaped through use rather than according to a single decorative plan. It was a practical spiritual companion for women living within a Franciscan religious environment.
Translation as Pastoral Practice
The Judith translation shows how vernacular writing could serve a precise community. András Nyújtódi was not producing a neutral literary version for an anonymous public. He addressed a known reader whose religious life, name, and daily circumstances shaped his work. Explanations could be added where Latin learning required mediation, and the biblical heroine could become an immediate model of courage, fidelity, and divine assistance. Translation here is an act of care as much as an act of scholarship.
The intended female audience is equally important. Books for nuns often combined biblical narrative, instruction, exempla, prayer, and practical guidance because communal and private devotion demanded several kinds of reading. The codex mirrors this range. Its contents help readers understand doctrine, examine conduct, prepare for death, and persevere in obedience. Rather than offering a single continuous work, it gathers materials suited to repeated consultation over time.
Its composite character preserves the social life of texts. Separate booklets could be copied by different hands, used in different contexts, and only later brought together. Variations in script and arrangement are therefore not defects but evidence of circulation and adaptation. The possible participation of Judit herself, though uncertain, points to the broader reality that religious women were not merely passive recipients; they could read, copy, organise, and transmit books within their communities.
The date 1526 gives the manuscript a poignant historical horizon. While the kingdom faced catastrophe at Mohács, this book records another form of continuity: Scripture entering Hungarian, teaching passing from one person to another, and familial affection taking durable written form. Its historical power lies in precisely this scale, where large events remain outside the page but human resilience is present in every line.
Hungarian Language on the Eve of Mohács
The first dated section was completed only weeks before the Battle of Mohács transformed the history of the Hungarian kingdom. Yet the codex does not speak in the language of high politics. It records the quieter work of translating Scripture, explaining doctrine, preparing for death, and sustaining religious vocation.
For linguistic and literary history, the manuscript is invaluable. András Nyújtódi does not translate mechanically: he adds explanations and addresses his intended readers with pastoral immediacy. The ***Nyújtódi Codex*** is therefore both a major witness to early Hungarian prose and a rare book in which affection, faith, and the vernacular meet in a recognisable human voice.
