Description
Ramon Llull's Will

Ramon Llull (ca. 1232-1316) is one of the most famous and influential Spanish scholars of the Middle Ages, although his works were already viewed with suspicion during his lifetime and were later even banned. He is considered the founder of Catalan literature. Initially a secular troubadour and tutor to James II of Majorca, the writer was moved by a vision of Christ to lead a clerical life and eventually joined the Franciscan order. From then on, he put everything he did at the service of his faith. His eventful life, which took him to almost every corner of the Mediterranean area, ended in the beginning of 1316 on the way back from a diplomatic journey on behalf of James II. He was then buried in the Convent de Sant Francesc in his native city of Palma. He had already drawn up his will with a Mallorcan notary on 26 April 1313, a year before setting off on his journey. The only surviving copy of his last will and testament is the notarial copy, which is now kept in the archives of the Marquès de Barberà i de la Manresana al Castell de Vilassar de Dalt in Barcelona.
