Description
Ambrosiana Voyage around the World by Antonio Pigafetta

In order to discover a new sea route to India and thus open up new trade routes, Ferdinand Magellan (before 1485–1521) set sail with several ships on September 20, 1519. The voyage resulted in the first historically documented circumnavigation of the globe, which, however, had to be completed by Juan Sebastián Elcano (1486/1487–1526) because it claimed Magellan's life. Antonio Pigafetta (before 1492–1524) accompanied this ambitious undertaking as a chronicler. His famous Account of the First Circumnavigation of the Globe is based on his travel diary and is accompanied by 23 colored, often sketch-like maps. They illustrate the numerous discoveries made by the adventurers. Lands, islands, settlements, plants, and animals previously unknown in Europe are visualized in rich colors. The text also recounts life on board, although Elcano is remarkably not mentioned at all. The only surviving Italian copy of the report, which was also originally written in Italian, is now kept in the Biblioteca Ambrosiana and also includes a fascinating treatise on the Earth's sphere and the art of navigation.
