Description
Alchemical Didactic Poem from 1556

The Alchemical Didactic Poem from 1556, also known as the Book of Lambspring, was written in the 16th century by a nobleman or noblewoman from the Low German region, who refers to themselves as “Lambspring” in the epilogue. Beyond that, the identity of the author remains a mystery to this day, even though the treatise was to have a considerable influence on 17th century alchemical literature and still inspired esotericists in the 19th century. The oldest surviving manuscript is now kept in the Zurich Central Library and contains 15 allegorical didactic poems and 15 round, richly colored emblems. These translate the mystical content of the verses into captivating images and make this copy particularly appealing. While the first ten poems deal with the creation of the legendary philosopher's stone, the last five poems describe the use of the stone in the form of an allegorical narration about an old king, his son, and a spiritual leader, which also deals with personal transformation. An artistic insight into the mystical world of the early modern period!

The artful manuscript opens with an information-packed double page: on the left is a posthumous dedication to a cleric named “Hermannus Marsovi,” who was probably the Lutheran theologian and reformer Hermann Marsow (died 1555). Below the dedication, which is dated to 1556, a coat of arms with a white lamb shines in bright yellow and shaded blue – a symbolic fantasy crest for the author of the text, who refers to himself or herself as “Lamspringkh” in the prologue beginning on the opposite page. With the work being disseminated dozens of times, especially through early modern print editions, the spelling “Lambspring” became established over time. Since the Book of Lambspring is the only surviving work by the author and the prologue contains little information about the enigmatic person, their true identity remains unknown to this day.

Mystical Poems and Allegorical Images

However, Lambspring's work testifies to a profound knowledge of alchemical literature, which is revealed here in 15 allegorical poems in a highly obscured form. They are not to be understood as concrete instructions for laboratory practice, but rather describe the elaborate production and effects of the philosopher's stone in the form of artistic poetry. Each of these poems is preceded by a circular emblem with an allegorical representation, which is accompanied and explained by a German-Latin caption. However, the matching emblems and poems are not arranged facing each other. Instead, the image is always shown first on the recto page, and only after turning the page can the corresponding poem be read on the respective verso page. The round miniatures with their charming foliate frames seem to have been decisive for the design of the manuscript.

Deer and Unicorn

The third emblem shows a standing deer and a lying unicorn at the edge of a forest. They embody the Anima or soul and the Spiritus or spirit, which together with the body, represented here by the forest, form a unity. According to the accompanying poem, the soul and spirit must be brought together and led out of the body, only to be driven back into it again. This binding and dissolving plays an important role in Lambspring's alchemy for the complex process that is supposed to produce the philosopher's stone. It is basically about the transformation of all three components – body, spirit, and soul – that are attributed to every living being and thing.

Putrefaction – The Decay

Against a panoramic backdrop of grasslands with a city in the distance, a warrior battles a deep black dragon at the edge of a forest. In his armour, the fighter looks like an ancient Roman soldier and has already raised his sword to deliver the death blow. The beast seems to be trying to rear up one last time, wrapping its serpentine tail around a tree – other trees appear to have already fallen victim to it.

Reminiscent of images of Saint George slaying the devilish dragon, the depiction refers to one of the first stages in the production of the philosopher's stone: putrefaction – decay. According to the corresponding poem, in order to overcome this black state of the still barely refined raw material, the animal's head must be cut off, which would transform its color to white.
