An Obstetrical Atlas for Close Study

Published in Paris between 1822 and 1827, the Nouvelles démonstrations d’accouchemens combine concise explanatory texts with an extensive sequence of large-format plates. The detailed original title already describes the images as accompanied by explanatory commentary intended to facilitate their understanding. The work is therefore consistently designed around the joint study of image and explanation.

Rather than presenting obstetrics as a continuous theoretical treatise, Jacques-Pierre Maygrier organizes the subject into individual themes explored through images. The plates address female anatomy, the position of the child in the womb, different fetal presentations, and obstetrical procedures and instruments. Together, they offer a systematically arranged survey of central aspects of contemporary obstetrics.

Anatomy, Fetal Position, and the Mechanism of Birth

Several illustrations are devoted to the anatomical conditions underlying childbirth. The pelvis, female reproductive organs, uterus, and fetus are shown in different views and sections. Other plates demonstrate the various positions the child may assume in the womb and the changes in position that influence the course of delivery. The sequence thus makes spatial relationships visible that are difficult to convey through words alone.

The atlas also depicts specific situations arising during childbirth. It illustrates the handling of the child in difficult presentations, procedures for turning the fetus in the womb, and the use of obstetrical forceps. Surgical interventions are also presented visually. The plates therefore document not only anatomical knowledge, but also the practical methods of early nineteenth-century obstetrics.

Eighty Plates in Monumental Format

The Paris first edition comprises 80 pages of text, 80 plates, and a portrait of Maygrier. Published in folio format, it appeared in twenty installments, each containing four plates. The complete work was issued over a period of several years. This structure accounts for the atlas’s exceptional scope and its clear arrangement into closely coordinated visual and textual elements.

The compositions were based on drawings by Antoine Chazal and reproduced as finely executed prints. Figures, anatomical structures, hands, and instruments stand out clearly, directing attention to the particular procedure being explained. The combination of medical information and meticulous graphic design shapes the distinctive visual character of the work.

Visual Instruction Rather Than Abstract Theory

The explanatory texts relate directly to the plates. They identify the depicted body parts, positions, and actions and guide the reader through each illustration. The work can therefore be understood as an atlas whose value depends largely on the comparison of text and image—not as a complete textbook of obstetrics, but as a visual presentation of selected anatomical and practical subjects.

The Nouvelles démonstrations d’accouchemens preserve the medical knowledge and obstetrical practices of their time in an unusually extensive sequence of images. Through 80 large-format plates, concise explanations, and a method that divides complex procedures into comprehensible stages, the atlas offers an impressive record of medical knowledge transfer in the early nineteenth century.
