Description
Getty Murúa

The so-called Getty Murúa or Historia general del Piru is one of the few surviving testimonies to the culture of the Incas, which was wiped out by the colonization of the Americas. This explains the extraordinary cultural-historical value of the colorful manuscript, which is particularly famous for its detailed depictions of the traditional fashion of the ruling men and women of the powerful dynasty. 35 miniatures show the rulers mostly individually and standing. At least one anonymous indigenous painter created the remarkable images for the Spanish Mercedarian monk and missionary Martín de Murúa († around 1618). Thus produced after the Spanish invasion, the manuscript also contains extensive records of the dynastic history and culture of the Incas and is part of Murúa's partially lost chronicle of entire South America and was originally intended to serve as a template for a printed book, which was never published.
