Troilus and Criseyde by Geoffrey Chaucer
(1,000€ - 3,000€)
Geoffrey Chaucer’s Troilus and Criseyde is one of the great tragic love stories of medieval English literature.
Chaucer’s Great Tale of Love and Loss
Geoffrey Chaucer composed Troilus and Criseyde in the 1380s, creating one of the most important works of Middle English literature. In five books written in seven-line stanzas, later known as rhyme royal, he transformed a traditional story from the Trojan War into a profound exploration of human emotion. Giovanni Boccaccio’s Il Filostrato served as an important source, yet Chaucer endowed the characters with a new psychological depth. The courtly love story thus became a poem of extraordinary complexity.
A Love in the Shadow of the Trojan War
At the beginning of the story, the Trojan prince Troilus mocks the power of love—until he sees Criseyde and is himself overwhelmed by it. Her uncle Pandarus brings the two together, and for a brief time their secret relationship seems capable of overcoming every obstacle. Yet the war intrudes upon their happiness: Criseyde is sent to the Greek camp in exchange for a prisoner and is unable to keep her promise to return to Troy.
From this tragic love story Chaucer develops a work filled with inner conflict and moral ambiguity. Troilus loves with unconditional devotion, while Criseyde is caught between affection, fear, and the pressures of her circumstances. Because Chaucer takes her doubts seriously, the narrative possesses a remarkable emotional immediacy.
Between Fate, Freedom, and Transience
The turning wheel of Fortune governs not only the course of the war, but also the lives of the lovers. Again and again, the poem asks whether human beings can shape their own destiny or remain subject to forces beyond their control. Chaucer thus combines courtly love poetry with philosophical reflection on loyalty, free will, and the instability of earthly happiness.
The narrator, too, maintains no detached neutrality. He comments, hesitates, expresses compassion, and resists simple judgments. Criseyde in particular appears not merely as an unfaithful lover, but as a vulnerable woman in a world determined by war. This psychological openness gives Troilus and Criseyde a quality that can seem remarkably close to that of an early novel.
A Lavishly Conceived Illustrated Manuscript
MS 61 was produced in England around 1415–1425, only a few decades after Chaucer’s death. The codex was conceived as a luxurious edition containing more than ninety illustrations. The ambitious project, however, remained unfinished: numerous spaces reserved for miniatures were left empty, and only the full-page frontispiece was completed. These traces offer a rare insight into the production of an elaborate English illuminated manuscript.
The frontispiece is among the most famous medieval representations of Chaucer. The poet is shown reciting his work before a richly dressed courtly audience, while the world of the narrative unfolds above him. The combination of author portrait and literary action elevates the codex beyond a mere copy of the text. The patron remains unknown, but the design and intended decoration point to a distinguished courtly milieu.
A Key Witness to English Book Culture
By 1570, the codex belonged to the writer and clergyman Stephen Batman, a chaplain to Matthew Parker. It subsequently entered the collection of the Archbishop of Canterbury and is now preserved in the Parker Library at Corpus Christi College, Cambridge.
Its early date, outstanding textual significance, and uniquely documented yet unfinished pictorial programme make MS 61 a key witness to English literary and book history. The codex offers direct access to Chaucer’s world and preserves the ambitious attempt to give one of the great works of the Middle Ages a sumptuous visual form.
